Questions about contacts lenses
-
How old do I have to be to wear contact lenses?
Lots of teens, and even some pre-teens, wear contact lenses. The average age a kid first gets contacts is 13, but it has been shown that some younger children are mature enough to wear and care for contact lenses. Successful lens wear depends more on responsibility and attitude than age. Seeing an eye doctor will help you figure out whether contact lenses are right for you.
-
Are contact lenses comfortable to wear?
About 40 million people in the U.S. who wear contacts sure think so. See how our exclusive HYDRACLEAR® Technology and LACREON® Technology helps make our contact lenses exceptionally comfortable.
-
Is it difficult to take care of contact lenses?
Advances in technology make contacts convenient and easy to use. And caring for them is easy with multipurpose lens solutions that make cleaning, disinfecting and storing your contacts simple and convenient. For the most convenient way to wear contacts, consider 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® Brand Contact Lenses or 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® Brand Contact Lenses for ASTIGMATISM Just wear them for the day, then throw them away.
-
Are contact lenses more expensive than glasses?
Contacts can be surprisingly affordable. And with vision insurance, out-of-pocket costs may be even less. Plus, replacing a lost contact lens can be cheap and easy compared to replacing lost or damaged glasses.
-
Why do I need a prescription for contact lenses?
A contact lens is a medical device, which is why you need a prescription. Only an eye doctor can properly measure your need for vision correction as well as determine which size and type of contact lens is best for you. Plus, changes that can occur to your vision and eye health over time can only be detected with specialized equipment and procedures.
-
Is my contact lens prescription different than my eyeglass prescription?
Yes. A prescription for contact lenses requires different information than a prescription for eyeglasses. Along with the power, a contact lens prescription will include the base curve (BC) which is used to match the curvature of the lens to your eye and the diameter (DIA) which is used to match the width of the lens to your eye.
-
How do I get a contact lens prescription?
Start by scheduling a contact lens appointment with an eye doctor. Your first contact lens fitting takes a little longer than a regular eye exam—about 90 minutes. Be sure to let the office know you want a contact lens fitting, not just a regular eye exam. Want to find an eye doctor near you that carries ACUVUE® Brand? Locate one here.
-
Can I continue using my glasses if I start wearing contact lenses?
Of course. You can wear both contacts and glasses, alternating for specific activities, needs, or preference. However, contacts can be used full-time. The choice is yours.
-
I don’t need glasses all the time. Why should I wear contact lenses?
If your need for vision correction isn’t that great, contact lenses are an easy, always-there alternative to putting on and taking off your glasses all day. And, unlike glasses, contacts won’t smudge, steam up, fall off or break, and you won't lose any peripheral (side) vision. Plus with convenient contacts like 1-DAY ACUVUE® TruEye® Brand or 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® Brand, there's no lens care or cleaning solutions. You just wear them for a day, then throw them away.
-
Can I wear contacts while participating in sports or recreational activities?
Bring it on. Contacts offer crisp, clear vision and you won’t have to worry about them fogging up, falling off or breaking during a game like glasses could. And you won't experience a loss of peripheral (side) vision like you can with glasses.
-
I've been told I have astigmatism. Can I still wear contact lenses?
Yes. Astigmatism is no longer a barrier to wearing contact lenses. ACUVUE® OASYS® Brand for ASTIGMATISM, ACUVUE® ADVANCE® Brand for ASTIGMATISM, and 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® Brand for ASTIGMATISM offer people with astigmatism the same exceptional fit, comfort, and visual clarity that regular contact lens wearers enjoy.
-
Can I wear contact lenses if I’ve had cataract surgery?
Maybe. Only your eye doctor can tell for certain. If your eye doctor feels that contacts are still an option, we believe that ACUVUE® Brand is an excellent choice.
-
If I've had LASIK or another refractive surgery, can I still wear contact lenses?
Maybe. Only your eye doctor can tell for certain. LASIK surgery permanently alters the shape of your eye, but doesn’t prevent the development of presbyopia, so you’ll still need vision correction at some point. If your eye doctor feels that contacts are still an option, we believe that ACUVUE® Brand is an excellent choice.
-
Can contact lenses get lost behind my eye?
Not a chance. It’s physically impossible for a contact lens to get lost “behind” your eye. A membrane covers your eye and connects to the inside of your eyelids, so the lens is unable to become lost.
-
Can contact lenses get fused to my eye?
No way. In the vast majority of cases, contact lenses are easily removed using the method your eye doctor recommended. All it takes is a little patience and practice. Watch how it’s done.
-
Can contact lenses pop out of my eye?
Not likely. With proper fitting, contacts should stay in place almost all the time. Even on that rare occasion when a contact lens moves out of place, it usually stays on your eye until you can move it back.
-
Can contact lenses scratch your eye?
Contacts lens-related problems can occur, but they’re unlikely. Most common eye health issues are related with poorly fitted lenses or not following an eye doctor’s recommended lens wear schedule. If you do experience any unusual eye discomfort or changes in your vision, remove your lenses and call your eye doctor immediately.
-
Are eye infections common when wearing contact lenses?
Contact lens related health problems can occur, but they’re rare. Infections are most commonly related to poor cleaning routines or other lens care-related issues. If you follow your eye doctor’s directions for proper wear and care, you should be fine.
-
How do allergies affect contact lenses?
Airborne allergens including pollen, dust, and pet dander, can build up on your lenses, causing discomfort. To help avoid this, consider 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® Brand Contact Lenses. These contacts may provide improved comfort if you’re suffering from mild discomfort and/or itching associated with allergies compared to lenses worn greater than 2 weeks.
-
What’s the difference between daily disposable and frequent replacement lenses?
The differences are primarily how long you should wear a lens before you need to replace it.
- Daily Disposable contact lenses are used for one day, then thrown away. And usually don’t involve the use of lens solutions.
- Frequent Replacement lenses are reused for two weeks to one month (depending on the lens and your eye doctor’s recommendation) and require cleaning and disinfection every day. Extended Wear means you can sleep in the lenses for up to six nights/seven days (based on your eye doctor’s recommendation). Some lenses are approved for even longer wearing periods, but we believe a shorter wear cycle, and more frequent use of fresh lenses, is more comfortable.
-
What’s the difference between Toric and astigmatism contact lenses?
They’re the same thing. Some brands use an ordinary gravity dependent design to help keep the lens from rotating, but ACUVUE® OASYS® Brand for ASTIGMATISM, ACUVUE® ADVANCE® Brand for ASTIGMATISM and 1-DAY ACUVUE® MOIST® Brand for ASTIGMATISM feature our BLINK STABILIZED™ lens design. This revolutionary design works to realign the lens naturally with every blink to help keep lenses from shifting and rotating. That means your vision can stay crisp, clear and stable. See it in action here.
-
What’s the difference between bifocal and multifocal contact lenses?
In general, bifocal contact lenses are designed with only two zones of vision (near and far) in the same lens. Multifocal contact lenses are designed with more than two zones of vision (near, far and in-between) in each lens. ACUVUE® OASYS® Brand for PRESBYOPIA uses a multifocal lens design called STEREO PRECISION TECHNOLOGY™. It brings together the best elements of each lens design, while limiting the drawbacks, to provide balanced vision near, far and in between.
-
What is a hydrogel?
A hydrogel is a soft, water-holding polymer plastic used to make contact lenses. See how it works here.
-
What is a silicone hydrogel?
A silicone hydrogel is the newest generation of hydrogels (soft, water-holding polymer plastics). See how it works here.
-
What is a base curve?
The base curve or BC is the back curvature of a contact lens. It’s used to match the curvature of the lens to your eye to provide the best fit and comfort. The lower the number, the steeper the curve of your cornea.
-
What is diameter?
Diameter or DIA is the distance across the surface of your lens, from edge to edge. Your eye doctor will determine the correct diameter for you during your exam.
-
What does Dk and Dk/t mean?
Dk, or oxygen permeability, is the rate that oxygen can flow through a contact lens material. Dk/t, or oxygen transmissibility, determines how much oxygen gets through a lens of a particular thickness.

Questions about lens wear & care
-
Are contact lenses divided between left-eye and right-eye?
No. All our contact lenses can be used in either eye. Your prescription determines which lens goes on which eye.
-
What can I do if my contact lenses aren’t comfortable?
Contact lens discomfort can take many forms and have many causes. The best way to find out why you’re uncomfortable, and what you can do about it, is to talk to your eye doctor.
-
What can I do if my vision isn’t that good even with contact lenses?
Many things can adversely affect your vision. It could be as simple as dry eyes, poor fitting lenses, or an out-of-date prescription. It could also be a sign of a more serious problem not related to your contacts. You should always talk to your eye doctor about any issues you are having with your vision or your contact lenses.
-
Can I use eye drops with my ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses?
In general, you should use eye drops specifically recommended for use with soft hydrophilic (water-loving) contact lenses. Check with your eye doctor. Mixing even approved lens solutions can sometimes cause problems.
-
How should I clean my ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses?
Ask your eye doctor which lens care products are right for you and your contacts. For cleaning and disinfection, use only a chemical (not heat) lens care system. Use of a heat (thermal) lens care system can damage your contact lenses.
-
Is rewetting contact lenses in your mouth a good idea?
Never. The mouth is not a sterile environment. If you need to rewet your lenses, use only contact lens rewetting drops or multipurpose contact lens disinfecting solution. Your eye doctor can recommend the best lens solutions for your contacts.
-
A friend has never worn contacts and wants to try mine. Is this okay?
Do not share your lenses with your friend. Your contact lenses are medical devices that have been specially fit to your unique vision needs and the unique shape of your eye. Instead, tell your friend to ask her eye doctor about ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses. If ACUVUE® Brand is right for her, her eye doctor will fit her with Free* Trial Lenses (exam and fitting fees not included).
-
I've forgotten to replace my contacts on time. What should I do now?
Remove your current lenses immediately and replace them with a fresh pair. If you’re out of lenses, remove your current lenses and call your eye doctor to reorder. If your lenses are causing irritation, please contact your eye doctor immediately, and follow their advice.
-
Why should I change my contact lenses on time? They still feel fine.
They may feel fine but throughout the specified life of the lens, proteins and outside stuff, like dust and pollen can build up on the lens. Eventually, it can lead to eye irritation, itching and redness. And you don’t want that. Watch what can happen. If you need an extra tap on the shoulder to change your lenses on time, sign up for the ACUMINDER® Tool to get free reminders by text or email.
-
Do my eyes need a rest from contacts? Do they need to “breathe”?
In general, no. Unless your eye doctor has instructed you otherwise, you can safely wear your lenses every day. Today, contact lenses such as all ACUVUE® OASYS® Brands and 1-DAY ACUVUE® TruEye® Brand are made with a next generation silicone hydrogel material that provides much more oxygen to the eye than contacts made with a hydrogel material. The higher level of oxygen is good for your eyes.
-
Can I swim or shower while wearing my ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses?
In general, no. Exposing contact lenses to water during swimming or showering may increase the risk of serious infection from microorganisms. Ask your eye doctor about wearing contact lenses during activities involving exposure to water, especially swimming and other water sports.
-
If the expiration date on the package has past, can I still wear the contacts?
No. The expiration date represents the time period that we can ensure the lens and solution is sterile. No lens should be used beyond its expiration date.
-
How long can I keep contacts in the lens case before they’re not safe to wear?
It depends. Contact lens solution must be changed according to the manufacturer's recommendations, even if the contacts aren’t used every day. Ask your eye doctor which lens care solution is best for you and your contacts.
-
How do I put on and take off contact lenses?
It’s quite easy actually. After a few times, it’ll become second nature. See how it’s done here.
-
Can I wear contact lenses with make-up?
Absolutely. Just follow a few simple tips and you can help keep your eyes looking and feeling great. Check out makeup and contacts tips here.
-
How do I recycle my contact lenses?
For now, you can’t. Even though our contacts are made of plastic, they can’t be recycled and need to be thrown away. But the boxes and plastic blister packs are recyclable. Please check the guidelines of your local recycling program.
-
Can I donate my unused contact lenses to charity?
Unfortunately, no. Contact lenses are medical devices that require a prescription that can’t be transferred to another person. We suggest you ask the place where you bought your lenses if you can return or exchange the unopened boxes.
