You can feel good about wearing ACUVUE® lenses

As we make lenses that help you see the world around you more clearly, we also strive to make sure that it's a world worth seeing. To do this, we focus on three main areas. Together, they're our sustainability commitments.

Our sustainability commitments

Tackling Waste

Tackling Waste

We're constantly working to reduce the amount of waste we create. Take a look at some of what we've accomplished to date.

Reduction in plastic usage by 10 tons per year

A big impact has been created by removing plastic pouches for ACUVUE® delivery notices in Europe.

Recycling of 89% of raw materials

By recycling on location at our manufacturing sites, less ends up in the waste stream.

8.5 million lenses and cups recycled in the UK

We're excited to have partnered with Terra Cycle on the ACUVUE® Contact Lens recycling program in the UK.

Can I recycle my contacts

Currently you can't recycle the contact lenses themselves, as they're too small. You can recycle the box your contact lens comes in as well as the instruction guide. Your reusable container and solution bottle can also be put in your recycling bin.

The lens cup your contacts come in is made of recyclable material, but recycling it may not always be possible due to its small size. Please check with your local recycling center about their capabilities. To recycle the cup, make sure you separate the foil first—that belongs in the trash.

Considering Climate

Considering Climate

We all live on the same planet together, and climate change is a problem we have to solve together. In our production, packaging, and even the way we operate our business, we seek to reduce our carbon footprint.

Our carbon commitment

Through our current renewable and energy efficient initiatives, we're saving 48,000 tons of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to removing more than 10,000 cars from the road.* But it doesn't stop there.

By 2030, we're planning to achieve carbon neutrality in all our operations.

Spotlight of our current efforts

100% renewable electricity used to produce ACUVUE® lenses

We use solar power at our production site in Jacksonville, Florida and wind power in Limerick, Ireland.

Continuous Certification of ISO50001 Standard

For our energy management systems—including policies, targets improvements and use of data.

2021 LEED Award

We received the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Award for our Johnson &Johnson Vision Care Central Utility Plant in Jacksonville, Florida.

Protecting the Natural World

Protecting the natural world

It's our responsibility to minimize our impact on the planet. We're working hard to limit our use of natural resources and find ways to protect the environment through things like reducing water usage in our manufacturing and actively encouraging all ACUVUE® contact lens wearers not to flush their lenses.

Our packaging comes from responsibly managed forests

All ACUVUE® contact lenses guarantee 100% sustainable paper packaging (box and leaflet), certified by PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) and SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative)

Spotlight of our current efforts

57 tons of paper saved annually

We minimized the paper used in our ACUVUE OASYS® 1-Day contact lens (90 pack) packaging by 60% (for products manufactured in the USA).

Product of the Year 2017

Award given by Environmental Leader for sustainable packaging with ACUVUE OASYS® 1-Day.

±CO2 savings are based on engineering estimates completed at the time the projects were approved. Equivalency calculation was completed using US EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator.

Important information for contact lens wearers: ACUVUE Contact Lenses are available by prescription only for vision correction. An eye care professional will determine whether contact lenses are right for you. Although rare, serious eye problems can develop while wearing contact lenses. To help avoid these problems, follow the wear and replacement schedule and the lens care instructions provided by your eye doctor. Do not wear contact lenses if you have an eye infection, or experience eye discomfort, excessive tearing, vision changes, redness or other eye problems. If one of these conditions occurs, remove the lens and contact your eye doctor immediately. For more information on proper wear, care and safety, talk to your eye care professional, call 1-800-843-2020, or download the Patient Instruction Guides.
