How to tell if your contact lenses are inside out | ACUVUE®

How to tell if my contact lenses are inside out?

Soft contact lenses can sometimes feel a little uncomfortable if they aren’t sitting quite right. One possible reason is that they may be turned inside out.

In this ACUVUE® guide, we’ll help you spot the signs that your contact lenses are inside out, understand what that may feel like, and discover tips that ensure your contact lenses are in the right way.

Why it’s important to wear contact lenses the right way round

Wearing your contact lenses the right way round ensures optimal comfort, clear vision, and preserves eye health.

Your contact lenses are designed to fit your eyes’ curvature in a specific way. And while occasionally putting in your contact lenses inside-out typically won’t cause any damage, an incorrect fit can disrupt this.

You should always wear your contact lenses the right way round. That’s because consistently wearing contact lenses inside-out could potentially lead to more serious issues over time, like corneal scratching.1

Always be mindful of how your contact lenses feel after you put them in, and if something feels unusual, it might be worth taking them out and checking they are the correct way around and re-applying them.

What happens if you wear contact lenses inside out?

If you’re wearing your contact lenses inside-out, the lens won’t be able to sit properly on the eye. This can cause the lens to move around or even fall out. You may also experience:

  • Discomfort – Inside-out contact lenses can feel a bit off. It may feel slightly scratchy or just more noticeable than usual.
  • Irritation – Incorrectly placed contact lenses can cause your eyes to become red, watery, or inflamed, especially if they’re moving around in your eye more than they should.
  • Blurred or distorted vision – This can be a result of the inverted lens distorting the power of the lens. It can also be because the contact lenses aren’t in place properly.

6 easy ways to check if a contact lens is inside out

The best way to tell if contact lenses are inside-out is to do a quick check for yourself. There are a few easy ways to go about this:

Taco test

The taco test is a quick and easy trick to figure out if your contact lens is inside out. Just follow these steps:

  • Gently place the lens between your thumb and forefinger, holding it near the middle.
  • Give it a soft pinch, like you’re trying to fold it into a taco.
  • Take a look at the edges. If they curve smoothly inward like a taco shell, your contact lens is good to go. But if they flare outward, it’s probably inside out.

Edge shape test

This quick check helps you spot an inside-out lens just by looking at its edges. Here’s how to do it:

Simply:

  • Pop the lens onto the tip of your dry finger, with the edges pointing up.
  • Take a close look at the curve. If it forms a clean U-shape and the edges point straight up, it’s positioned correctly.
  • If the edges flare outward or the shape looks more like a shallow saucer, the lens is likely inside out.

Number or logo markings

Some manufacturers place laser markings on their contact lenses to help you easily recognise whether your contact lenses are inside-out or not. A common example is the marking of numbers ‘123’.

To locate the laser markings:

  • Place the contact lens on your fingertip.
  • Hold your finger near a bright light.
  • Looking around the outside edge of the contact lens, can you see the 123 marks?
  • Once you’ve located the numbers, check to see if they’re in the right order. If they show 1-2-3, your lens is in the correct position. If the numbers are backwards, it’s inside-out.

Feel test (comfort and movement)

You don’t always have to take your lens out of your eye to check if it’s inside-out. The feel test lets you assess how the contact lens feels when it’s on your eye.

Here’s how it works:

  • Check if the lens feels comfortable and natural when it’s on your eye. If it does, it’s likely the right way round.
  • If the lens feels uncomfortable, scratchy, or irritating, or your eye is watery or red, this may indicate the contact lens is inside-out.

How to avoid putting your contact lenses inside out in the future

When it comes to applying contact lenses, practice makes perfect. Putting in contact lenses inside-out is an easy mistake, but you can avoid doing it with a few simple tips and tricks:

  • Store safely and in the right way: Always store your contact lenses correctly in the case – right side up and dipped in fresh solution.
  • Check before you insert: Take a moment to carefully inspect your contact lens before inserting it.
  • Use suitable lighting: Ensure your environment is well-lit so you can clearly see the contact lens and avoid mistakes.
  • Take your time: Don’t rush putting your contact lenses in – no matter how late you are. Be patient and gentle to avoid any errors.
  • Listen to your eyes: If your contact lens feels unusual or uncomfortable, don’t ignore it. Remove it and check it’s not inside-out or damaged.
